Golf Club Distance Calculator

One reliable average distance is enough to create an initial personal distance chart. Carry is normally the better starting point. The results are estimates and do not replace a professional club fitting.

Carry is the distance from impact to the ball’s first contact with the ground.

Use your average distance from a normal, well-struck shot rather than your longest shot.

The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your entries are not stored or sent to an external service.

How does the golf club distance calculator work?

Choose a reference club and enter a reliable average distance. The calculator normalises that value to a 7-iron, then applies fixed distance ratios to the other clubs.

The model creates a consistent estimated distance chart; it does not claim to know your measured distances. Loft, club design, shaft, ball, altitude, weather and strike quality can all change the result.

Why is carry distance more useful?

Carry is the distance to the ball’s first contact with the ground. It is usually easier to compare than total distance because roll changes considerably with ground firmness, slope, wind and moisture.

You can still calculate from total distance if that is all you know. Average carry distance is the stronger basis for a later gap analysis.

What does gapping mean in golf?

Gapping describes the distance intervals between clubs in your bag. The goal is not to own a particular club number, but to cover the distances you need without obvious gaps or unnecessary overlaps.

Fairway woods, hybrids and long irons are often alternatives. Two clubs with similar distances may still be useful when their flight, roll or purpose differs.

How large should the gaps between golf clubs be?

Around 9 to 18 yards is often a useful guide for consecutive irons and wedges. A single gap of up to roughly 20 yards is not automatically a problem. Transitions to hybrids and fairway woods can be slightly larger.

These ranges are not rules. The analysis therefore ignores ordinary steps and focuses on clearly larger gaps or very small overlaps.

How should you measure your real golf club distances?

Hit several normal shots with each club and record carry distance where possible. Remove clear mishits, but do not discard every shorter strike. The average of the remaining normal shots is more useful on the course than your personal best.

A launch monitor is ideal. A reliable driving range can also provide a useful estimate when targets and ball flight are easy to see.

Why can two clubs with the same number travel different distances?

One modern 7-iron can have a very different loft from another. Clubhead design, shaft length, centre of gravity and ball speed also affect the flight.

The number printed on the club is therefore not a reliable distance comparison by itself. Check the actual loft and your average carry distance.

When might another wedge, hybrid or fairway wood help?

Another club may help when an important distance repeatedly falls between two clubs you already carry. A gap wedge can reduce a large interval below the pitching wedge, while a hybrid or fairway wood may cover a long-game gap.

Do not buy from this estimate alone. Test real shots first and check that the new club has a clearly different purpose.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Golf club distance calculator FAQs

Why does the calculator not flag every distance gap?

Normal distance steps vary by club and player. Gaps of roughly 15 to 18 yards between consecutive irons or wedges can be completely useful, so the analysis focuses on more obvious gaps or overlaps.

Can you calculate the distances of other golf clubs?

You can estimate a useful distance chart. The calculator applies fixed ratios to one known distance, but measured distances will always be more accurate.

Should you use carry or total distance?

Carry is normally better for comparisons because roll changes with ground and weather conditions. Total distance can still provide a first estimate if that is the only value you know.

What distance gaps between golf clubs are useful?

Roughly 9 to 18 yards is often a helpful guide for consecutive irons and wedges. Hybrids and fairway woods can have larger gaps. Your own bag and course strategy matter most.

How do you identify a gap in a golf bag?

After calculating your distances, select the clubs you carry. The gap analysis sorts their estimated distances and highlights unusually large intervals or overlaps.

Do you need to buy a club as soon as you find a gap?

No. Measure your actual carry distances first. Technique, loft adjustment or a different shot choice may explain or solve the gap.

Why does a hybrid travel almost as far as an iron?

Hybrids and long irons can have similar lofts and purposes. Distance is only part of the comparison; flight height, landing angle, roll and consistency also matter.

How accurate is the calculator?

It is a transparent estimate based on your entry, not a scientific prediction. It does not replace launch-monitor data or a professional fitting.
