You do not need 14 clubs to start. A putter, a lofted wedge, several forgiving irons, a hybrid and one longer club are enough for early practice and rounds. Fit, suitable length and consistent distance gaps matter more than owning every possible club.
The rules allow up to 14 clubs, but that is a maximum rather than a shopping list. A simple set reduces cost and makes club choice easier while you learn.
A sensible starter set
- Putter for the green.
- Sand wedge or another lofted wedge for short shots and bunkers.
- A few cavity-back irons, for example 7, 8 and 9.
- A hybrid to replace a difficult long iron.
- A fairway wood or driver once it helps rather than complicates tee shots.
The legal limit is explained in How many clubs can you carry?.
What to check before buying
Used or half sets can be excellent value. Check that the clubs suit your height, strength and handedness, that the grips are serviceable and that there are no serious shaft or head defects.
A basic fitting or advice from a qualified professional is more useful than choosing solely by brand, appearance or the club used by a tour player.
What to add later
Add a club when repeated shots reveal a genuine distance or shot gap. Many beginners benefit from a more reliable fairway club before they need several wedges or difficult long irons.

The essential point
Start with a compact, forgiving set that fits you. Learn predictable distances first; expand the set only when a specific club solves a real problem.
