How is a golf Score Differential calculated?

A Score Differential makes scores from courses and tees of different difficulty comparable for handicap purposes.

SHORT ANSWER

For an 18-hole score, the simplified formula is (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (adjusted gross score − Course Rating − playing conditions adjustment). The result is rounded to one decimal place and added to the scoring record.

The Score Differential is not simply the number of strokes over par. It measures the performance against the rated difficulty of the course and tees.

Example Score Differential calculationThe sample values 92, 71.5, 0, 113 and 125 produce a Score Differential of 18.5.SAMPLE VALUESGROSS92COURSE RATING71,5PCC0SLOPE RATING125(92 − 71,5 − 0) × 113 ÷ 125 = 18,5
This example shows the simplified WHS formula. The authorised handicap system calculates the official value.

What the formula uses

  • Adjusted gross score: the score after applying the maximum-hole-score rules for handicap purposes.
  • Course Rating: the expected score for a scratch player in normal conditions.
  • Slope Rating: the relative difficulty for non-scratch players compared with scratch players.
  • Playing Conditions Calculation: an adjustment applied only when the system identifies unusual scoring conditions.

Worked example

Suppose the adjusted gross score is 92, Course Rating is 71.4, Slope Rating is 128 and the playing-conditions adjustment is 0.

(113 ÷ 128) × (92 − 71.4) = 18.18, which rounds to a Score Differential of 18.2.

Why your app may show a different result

Nine-hole scores, maximum-hole-score adjustments, exceptional-score reductions and other Rules of Handicapping procedures can affect the record. Use the official system’s result rather than attempting to replace it with a personal spreadsheet.

KEY TAKEAWAY

The essential point

A Score Differential adjusts a score for rated course difficulty. The formula makes performances from different courses more comparable before they are used in the Handicap Index.
