Arrive before your tee time, check in, prepare and start from the correct tees. Play each hole from the teeing area until the ball is holed, record the score and move safely to the next hole. After the final hole, check and return the scorecard if the round is a competition or acceptable handicap score.
The exact routine varies by club, but the basic sequence is the same. A little preparation makes a first round calmer for you and the groups around you.
Before the tee time
- Book the tee time and check the club’s visitor requirements.
- Arrive early enough to check in and warm up.
- Confirm your starting tee, tees to be played and local rules.
- Carry enough balls, tees, a pitch-mark repairer and suitable clothing.
During the round
Players normally take turns, but safe ready golf is often encouraged in stroke play. Stay behind and away from anyone making a stroke, watch every ball and call ‘Fore!’ immediately if a shot may endanger somebody.
Replace divots where requested, repair pitch marks and rake bunkers. Keep up with the group ahead rather than measuring your pace only against the group behind.
After the final hole
Check the hole-by-hole scores with your marker. In a competition, follow the club’s process for certifying and returning the scorecard or digital score. A casual round simply ends once the group has left the final green and cleared the way for those behind.
